Nylon 6,6 is the fiber that is use as a carpet fiber. The molecules have an acid (COOH) group on each end and are reacted with molecules containing amine (NH2) groups on each end. The resulting nylon is named on the basis of the number of carbon atoms separating the two acid groups and the two amines. They are strong, abrasion resistance, easy to clean, lustrous, resistant to damage from oils and many chemicals, low in moisture absorbency, long lasting fibers, resilient, they can be easily colored from dyes or acids deposits and color can be removed with any bleaching products. Carpet with this fiber comes in many styles such as; cut pile, plush, looped, cut pile & looped combination, sculpted, high/low. It also comes in a variety of colors. This carpet fiber, as stated above has long life, it can last as long as 35 years if properly maintained. It can be stained with dyes or acid beverages and color loss will occur if any type of bleaching agents come in contact. Bleaching agents can be household bleach, pool chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, oxycleaners, and acne medications.
Polyester fibers ( PET ) A manufactured fiber in which the fiber forming substance is any long-chain synthetic polymer composed of at least 85% by weight of an ester of a substituted aromatic carboxylic acid, including but not restricted to substituted terephthalic units, p(-R-O-CO- C6H4-CO-O-x and para substituted hydroxy-benzoate units, p(-R-O-CO-C6H4-O-)x.
This fiber is strong, resistant to most chemicals, fast drying, mildew resistant, has an affinity for oil, traffic lanes will grey or shade out, can develop nap reversal, non-resilient. These fibers are solution dyed. Deposits ( spills ) with dyes should wash out with cold tap water. This fiber type does not have the life of nylon, about 15-20 years if properly maintained. Carpets with this fiber come in many styles as Nylon.

Olefin Fiber is a manufactured fiber in which the fiber-forming substance is any long-chain
synthetic polymer composed of at least 85% by weight of ethylene, propylene, or other olefin units derived from aliphatic hydrocarbons. These fibers are resistant to deterioration from chemicals, mildew, insects, perspiration, rot and weather, abrasion resistant, low moisture absorption, stain resistant and not affected by sunlight ( sun fading). It is non-resilient and has a low flammability, sliding furniture across this carpet can melt the fibers due to the heat of friction. It also has an affinity for oils so the traffic lanes will grey or shade out . This is the fiber used in the production of Berber carpet and many area rugs, sometimes label as polypropylene. The life of this carpet fiber is equal to polyester, about 15-20 years if properly maintained.

The fibers listed above are the three main carpet fibers found in homes today. They can come in many styles. This photo shows the different styles of carpet.
